About Bald Eagles: Plumage, size, and diet

Plumage
Plumage refers to the feathers covering a bird. The plumage of adult Bald Eagles is very distinct and makes them easy to recognize. The adults have a white head, white tail, and a dark brown colored body. Their feet and bill are bright yellow.

Even if you don't live in a part of the United States that has Bald Eagles nearby, you have probably seen lots of pictures of them. How many drawings or photos of a Bald Eagle can you find the next time you go into town? Try looking at the Post Office or the bank or in different advertisements.

Size
Adult Bald Ealges are about 30 inches long, can weigh 7 to 15 pounds, and have a wing span of 6 to 7 feet. This makes them one the largest birds in North America. As with many raptors, male and female Bald Eagles differ in size (females are usually larger).

Diet
Bald Eagles are opportunistic foragers, meaning they eat a variety of foods depending on what is locally and seasonally available. They are primarily fish eaters and usually catch fish swimming close to the surface of the water. Bald Eagles also eat other birds, small mammals, and reptiles. They are excellent hunters and are capable of catching their prey live, but will also scavenge carrion when possible.
