The
Mid-Atlantic Bird Conservation Region lies within the coastal plain of the
Atlantic Ocean and is bounded to the north by the Atlantic Northern Forests
region and to the south by the Southeastern Coastal Plain. The region contains
two physiographic areas including the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain and the
Southern New England. The landscape of the region is highly dissected due
both to the historic influence of man and to the complex interface between
land and water. Land ownership is highly fragmented, making progress toward
conservation goals particularly difficult. The summer and winter avifauna
is diverse and transitional between those of the south and north Atlantic
Coasts. The area plays a critical role as a staging area during both spring
and fall migrations. |
