Priority Habitats/Species

The conservation plan for the mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain identifies 8 different habitat types that are critical to the long-term health of priority bird populations. In order of regional priority these habitats include pine savanna, barrier and bay island, salt marsh, forested wetland, mixed upland forest, early successional, pine plantation, and fresh/brackish marsh. These habitats are broadly defined with several subtypes being recognized within the conservation plan. In general, the conservation plan and the habitat assessment focus on the broader categories except when subtypes are critical to the management of priority species.
