Coastal Diversity Program
In order to maintain diversity within any region,
it is necessary to identify and conserve those ecosystems and species
at risk before they are reduced to dangerous levels. This research
program focuses on those species that have shown significant declines
or that we believe are vulnerable in the mid-Atlantic region. Since
the inception of the Center, staff and students have investigated
several bird communities that exist within vulnerable ecosystems.
Habitats of primary interest include grasslands, upland forests,
forested wetlands, marshlands, and barrier islands. Staff have also
conducted targeted projects dealing with several dozen species of
concern.
