Threatened & Endangered Species Program

This research program focuses on those species that have been formally classified as threatened or endangered on a federal level. In addition to population monitoring, the Center conducts basic research to better understand the root causes of population declines, as well as, research on techniques that will lead to more effective management. The Center maintains active research and monitoring programs for every avian species with this designation in the mid-Atlantic region. Currently this includes the bald eagle, red-cockaded woodpecker, piping plover, and peregrine falcon (though peregrines were recently removed from the federal list, we maintain them in this program recognizing their vulnerability within the mid-Atlantic). The Center serves as one of the principal advisors to federal and state agencies responsible for the management and recovery of these species.
